I have noticed the same thing, more so as of late—Leopard seems to handle software updates differently and seems to automate the process more taking the control out of the users to decide when to restart and when to wait. Seems like a step back in that regard.

As an active participant in 'new media' I'm finding this whole discussion fascinating.

One of the tenets, I believe of 'new media' is that it's ... well ... new. The idea is that we have the ability to niche, create, and deliver information, entertainment, and even education using modes and mechanisms that didn't exist before 1992.

Do these new media require new tropes? Do we need to develop a new cultural vernacular to accommodate them? How does shifting text to audio - or audio to text - or text to video - or radio to RSS - or FM to XM change what/how/what we write?

I'm looking forward to seeing what you think as the semester goes on.

And I want to be clear that I found the sentiment of your post admirable, and I wanted to separate apart a love of the printed word and its demise in favor of more instantly gratifying entertainment.

I still feel that your comments are about a cultural shift, and what I am unclear about is whether computer technology forced this shift or whether since the Industrial Revolution, the shifting culture demanded the advances in technology...

I'm not in anyway saying that books in a digital format are any less meaningful. What I'm getting at is more that people stray away from reading at all because of computers; right now most books are still in print so that's the only choice they have to read.
And I do wholly agree with your inerpretation that a quiet and reflective reading might best be experienced with a printed page. I know that I'm always distracted by things on my computer, whether it's instant messaging or my obsessive need to check me email.
More to the point, though, people tend to stray away from reading books because many times they don't see a reason for it. With things like Spark Notes and Cliff Notes out and about on the internet, people read actual texts less because they can just look up a summary of it instead.

Porn leads development.

[rant]
The reason for voice in SL is so the "one hand typists" only need to talk dirty while clicking the Xcite huds. It probably makes for a much more rewarding experience, unless your spouse is sitting within earshot.

SL is an amazing *learning* environment. The biggest obstacle to using it as a *teaching* environment is the teachers who use it.

In your post you state:

... does the whole big world of creating art, objects, communication, etc. for the web seem overwhelming? Or does it seem touch-of-a-button easy as all the message-creator needs to do is learn to exploit existing tools? Which is it? Or can it be both?

As someone who is just skimming the surface of web based tools in my student/professional life, my answer is both. As I learn about creating my web page for class, I have a better concept of the underlying structure and evolution of web design, but my design skills for the web are woefully inadequate. I have used the "touch-of-a-button" easy tools to create web-based materials, but I struggle with finding the way to bridge the knowledge gap between my paint-by-numbers basic web page I created for class to the more attractive items I have developed with ease. For lack of a better word at the moment, I guess you could say I feel unfulfilled.

[...] I have heard the allegations that today’s kids are digital natives, which I recently remarked was not what my new experience is. I might be being a little bit harsh. While they did not immediately seem to register understanding when they created accounts on the class blog, no one claimed to not know what a computer is or what the internets are. Actually, the whole process of getting people oriented to what they needed to post and where went fairly smoothly. [...]

Yes. I felt like crying. :[

One thing that I found funny was that I was totally embarrassed about it and have spent the last 4 days doing damage control with the people that actually did signup.

However, I talked to a number of people that received the invitation from me and they thought nothing of it.

In fact, it's allowed me to re-new my friendship with people I haven't talk to in years.

Thank you, Quechup.
